$2,080.00

In stock

Western Europe, France, ca. 1880s to 1920s CE. A French military regimental flag, or fanion, associated with the 3rd Infantry Regiment. One side bears the designation “3e Reg. d’Infanterie,” while the verso is inscribed “1er Bataillon” (1st Battalion). The fanion is constructed of blue silk with applied gold fringe and embroidered flaming grenade motifs, emblematic of French infantry units. The metallic gold thread embroidery is worked over raised cardstock, creating a pronounced relief effect for the lettering and symbols. The blue silk ground is largely worn away from age and use, though the underlying cotton fabric and metallic embroidery remain intact. One edge, lacking fringe, is finished as a sleeve intended for mounting on a wooden pole. Size: 20.5″ W x 15″ H (52.1 cm x 38.1 cm)

Condition: The silk is very worn as shown, with extensive losses, frays, and tears. The cotton layer underneath is in stable condition and can be handled. Metallic embroidery threads and tassels are all in very nice and stable condition.

Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection; Ex. Private collection, Pueblo, Mexico, 2019
