Lot 32a, Auction 4/19/2024: Lot of 4 Greek Attic Pottery Skyphoi

Sold

Ancient Greece, Attic, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. A set of 4 wheel-thrown pottery drinking vessels known as skyphoi, each with a deep basin and a pair of projecting handles. Each skyphos is covered in lustrous black glaze that is a decorative staple of fine Attic pottery, indicating that these were perhaps intended as high-quality funerary offerings. Size of largest: 5.5″ L x 8.125″ W x 2.8″ H (14 cm x 20.6 cm x 7.1 cm)

Condition: One skyphos repaired with small chips missing in scattered areas; remaining 3 skyphoi are intact and very good. Abrasions and small nicks, with light fading and chipping to pigment. Nice preservation to overall forms.

Provenance: Private West Hollywood, California, USA collection, acquired at auction; ex-private old Maryland, USA collection, acquired in the early 1990s
