Lot 326, Auction 4/5/2024: Rare 19th C. Dayak Bahau Wood Libation Bowl

$1,147.50

In stock

Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Kayanic Dayak peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautiful dark wood bowl, long and leaf-shaped, with a shallow interior and gently sloping walls that rise to form a double lip at one end. The other end has a handle in the form of an “aso.” This is a stylized dragon figure whose name in the Kayanic language means “dog.” This is not because the figure has any canine features, but rather because the dragon’s form is so powerful that it must be handled with care, and its real name cannot be invoked without invoking its power. Instead, it is called “aso” as a shorthand. Size: 12.875″ L x 6.125″ W x 2.1″ H (32.7 cm x 15.6 cm x 5.3 cm); 7.875″ H (20 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Minor abrasions and pitting, with softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout. Previous inventory label beneath base.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired in September 2023
