Southeast Asia, Thailand, Rattanakosin Period, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A lovely cast brass fragmentary head portion of a Buddha sculpture, with a calm visage adorned in liberal remains of lustrous gold-colored paint. His eyes are cast downwards under large lids and softly arched brows, as a slender nose and slightly smiling lips complete his tranquil expression. An ornate headdress of scrolling floral motif frames his face, sitting just below his tiered ushnisha and above his elongated earlobes. Size: 4.5″ L x 4.4″ W x 8″ H (11.4 cm x 11.2 cm x 20.3 cm); 11″ H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.

According to the consignor, this piece was previously owned by the Portland Art Museum in Oregon.

Condition: Part of a larger piece with some light surface wear and abrasions as shown, but otherwise, excellent presentation with liberal remains of gold coloring. Nice detail and earthen encrustations in areas. Permanently adhered to custom stand with old collection number and de-acquisition number purportedly from Portland Art Museum, Oregon on underside of base.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
