Lot 324, Auction 4/5/2024: 19th C. Indonesian Wood Kris Handle w/ Horse Head

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Madura, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden kris handle depicting a sweeping horse head atop an otherwise highly abstract body. The composition is painted with red and golden pigments and has a circular silver guard beneath. Size: 4.625″ L x 1.8″ W x 1.7″ H (11.7 cm x 4.6 cm x 4.3 cm); 5.375″ H (13.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Spacer disc reattached to bottom of handle, with heavy adhesive residue around circumference. Abrasions and fading to pigment, with softening to some finer details, and chips around peripheries. Interesting form. Previous inventory label beneath display stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-private Ami Brown collection, Israel
