Lot 321, Auction 4/5/2024: 19th C. Indonesian Kris w/ Inlaid Selut

Sold

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. late 19th century CE. A kris (sometimes keris), with a sinuously curving blade in two tones of metal and an intricately carved handle, with both the top of the blade and the silver guard with 25 white sapphires. The grip is carved wood with delicate zoomorphic faces at its lower end and under the curve of its hilt. The sheath, which may be slightly newer than the weapon based on patina, is highly polished wood with an applied brass sheet decorated with relief-carved vines and leaves. The double-sided blade itself on this particular kris is incredible – multi-colored bands of folded metal. Size: 19.25″ L x 5.75″ W (48.9 cm x 14.6 cm); silver quality: 72%

Condition: Sheath with creasing as shown, very tip of blade missing, small loss at base of grip.

Provenance: private Miami, Florida, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private New Haven, Connecticut, USA collection
