Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Tesuque Pueblo people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-built terracotta sculpture of a seated “Rain Deity” with pursed lips and his hands held up as if he once grasped a flute instrument. In the late 19th century, the Tesuque Pueblo people began to sculpt small pottery figurines, such as this for sale under the pretense they were rain deities to encourage tourist sales. This appears to be an early example of this type, with the remains of an antique red and white inventory tag on the chest. These “gods” have since evolved into artisanal and imaginative figurines often brightly painted. Size: 3.5″ L x 3.25″ W x 6″ H (8.9 cm x 8.3 cm x 15.2 cm)
