In stock

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful gilt copper kris handle cast in the form of a standing deity figure, inlaid with glass cabochons across the surface. The right arm bent at the elbow and holds the vase containing the elixir of long life. The face has a characteristic grin, mustache, and bulging eyes; and the head is surmounted by a crown. The cabochon glass of predominantly amber yellow and red hues are arranged on the surface. The deity depicted is Batara Bayu, the Indonesian version of the Indian wind god, Vayu. He is also the god of health and prosperity, as well as protection against evil – perfect for a sword handle. Size: 5.5″ L x 2″ W (14 cm x 5.1 cm); 7.25″ H (18.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Fading and losses to gilt surface layers. Dark patina and toning. Indentations and small abrasions throughout. Chips and stable fissures in the glass inlays.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
