Lot 318, Auction 4/5/2024: Rare 19th C. Filipino Ifugao Wood Headhunter Helmet

Southeast Asia, Philippines, Northern Luzon Island, Ifugao, ca. 19th century CE. A rare example of a hand-carved wooden headhunter helmet of domed form that depicts a stylized anthropomorphic countenance. The wide, ovoid eyes, slender nose, pursed lips, and sweeping brows comprise the expressive visage, and layers of light- and dark-brown pigment covers the surfaces. A pair of suspension holes along the lower periphery enabled the helmet to be secured to the wearer with a chinstrap. Size: 8.96″ L x 8.4″ W x 5.2″ H (22.8 cm x 21.3 cm x 13.2 cm); 10.9″ H (27.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Nicks and abrasions, with minor pitting, and wear to some facial features, otherwise intact and excellent. Great coloration throughout.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
