Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo culture, ca. 19th century CE. A wooden cradleboard constructed from two vertical backboard planks joined with a footrest and secured with leather lacing, the surface showing warm patina and evidence of long use. The distinctive V-shaped cutout at the top is characteristic of Navajo examples, while the upper edges display loss where a curved wooden arch once extended to support a protective sunshade over the infant’s head; a modern black cotton cloth has been added beneath the webbing for display. Size: 27.5″ L x 9″ W (69.8 cm x 22.9 cm)
Condition: Wood has a smooth and lustrous patina from age and use. Old losses and abrasions on the upper panels. Leather has some cracking but is supple. Black cloth is modern and can easily be removed.
