In stock

Greece, Boeotian, Archaic period, ca. 650 to 500 BCE. A graceful pottery figure of a goddess boasting remains of painted detail on her sensitively rendered face and sizable, flared headdress. Featuring a flattened, minimalist body with petite arms, the deity gazes forward from almond-shaped eyes that flank a naturalistic nose, and thin lips, with long straight hair framing her ovoid visage. The headdress is intricately decorated with liberal remains of horizontal and diagonal striations in orange pigment on a white ground. This excellent example has the classic form of the Archaic face – somewhat realistic, but not yet showing the individualized portrayals from the Classical era. Size: 0.7″ L x 3.2″ W x 7.6″ H (1.8 cm x 8.1 cm x 19.3 cm); 8.4″ H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Professionally repaired with restoration over break lines. Light surface wear as shown, but otherwise excellent with impressive preservation of pigments. Old collection number inscribed on verso.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, acquired September 14, 2023, Lot 193; ex-Brunk Auctions, Asheville, North Carolina, USA; ex-private Estate, Virginia, USA
