Lot 307a, Auction 3/19/2026: Three Panama Kuna Mola Textile Blouses
$325.00
In stock
Central America, Panama, San Blas Islands, Guna (Kuna) culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. Three cotton mola blouses composed of brightly colored upper yokes with short gathered sleeves and lower mola panels created in the traditional layered reverse applique technique. One blouse displays an intricate abstract geometric composition, and another presents a large bell motif framed by scrolling geometric elements. The largest features a bold circular design with a stylized bull and the words “Estados Unidos Monaco,” and the verso with a horse and “Supercentro Monaco.” Each panel reveals carefully hand-cut layers of colored cotton stitched to produce complex linear patterns and strong color contrasts typical of Guna textile artistry. These garments function both as everyday dress and as expressive works of cultural identity within the Guna mola tradition. Size of largest: 22″ L x 33″ W (55.9 cm x 83.8 cm)
Condition: Light wear consistent with use and age. Small tears and fraying especially on underarm areas and along some seams and edges. The mola panels remain bright and intact, with the layered reverse applique work and stitching largely well preserved.
Provenance: private Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, acquired in 2022
