Lot 29, Auction 4/12/2024: Santo Domingo Pottery Bowl w/ Bird – Vidal Aguilar

Sold

Vidal Aguilar (Santo Domingo Pueblo, b. 1972). Painted pottery bowl with bird and flowers, n.d. Signed “Vidal Aguilar / Santo Domingo Rio” on underside of base. A wonderful pottery bowl by Santo Domingo artist Vidal Aguilar of the famous Aguilar family of potters that date back to the 1800s. The hemispherical vessel is hand-painted in black-on-beige decoration of a bird, perhaps a peacock, at the center of the interior basin surrounded by floral and vegetal motifs, while the exterior boasts a minimalist geometric design of vertical stripes and circles with an undulating band below. The base presents bare terracotta in a vibrant shade of red that nicely complements the painted decoration. Though some of Vidal’s works are indebted to his influential ancestors Felipita Aguilar Garcia and Asuncion Aguilar Cate, he moves in his own direction by adding figural designs, and expanding the size of his pieces beyond that of the typical pueblo vessels. Size: 12″ Diameter x 5″ H (30.5 cm x 12.7 cm)

According to Gregory Schaaf’s “Southern Pueblo Pottery: 2,000 Artist Biographies”: “Vidal Aguilar makes some of the largest polychrome ollas at Santo Domingo in the Aguilar family tradition. His pottery is hand coiled and polished. His black paint is a mineral pigment used centuries ago, rather than the typically used Guaco or Mountain Bee plant. His red and white paints are natural clay. He fires his pottery in a pit.”
