Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Minangkabau culture, ca. 19th century CE. A defensive shield or buckler, crafted from lightweight wood with brass six-pointed stars, each with a central domed boss, are riveted to the surface. Wires are impressed into the surface along the outer periphery. The verso of the shield is equipped with four small rings with a braided yarn handle. This shield offered little protection from arrows and was primarily used in hand-to-hand combat and in sword dances by the Aceh people. Size: 9.75″ Diameter x 1.5″ W (24.8 cm x 3.8 cm); 10″ H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Chips and small losses to wood along the rim as shown. Indentations to the star centers. Dark patina and green oxidation on some rivets and stars. Stable pressure fissure near edge and verso. Good antique condition!
