Joseph Gubocki (American, active XIX century). Ankylosaurus. Ceramic sculpture, n.d. Signed on underside near proper right front leg. A compact and spirited rendering of prehistoric armor, this ceramic ankylosaurus by American artist Joseph Gubocki captures the creature’s weight and defensive character with a touch of studio whimsy. Modeled in a low, quadrupedal stance, the figure emphasizes the dinosaur’s distinctive anatomy, with a broad, grounded body, sturdy legs, and an extended tail. The back is articulated with rows of raised, knobby armor and lateral spikes, lending texture and rhythm to the form. The head is subtly defined, with alert eyes and a forward thrust that suggests motion despite the creature’s heavy build. The surface is finished in a variegated blue glaze, pooling and breaking across the contours to reveal earthy undertones beneath. Size: 8.5″ L x 4.1″ W x 3.5″ H (21.6 cm x 10.4 cm x 8.9 cm)
Small speckled inclusions and irregularities in the glaze contribute to a tactile, almost geological quality, enhancing the sense of age and fossil-like presence. The underside bears a faint incised signature beneath the glaze near the proper right front leg, identifying the work as that of Joseph Gubocki. Both playful and grounded in observation, the sculpture bridges natural history and studio ceramics, presenting a familiar prehistoric subject through the lens of an individual hand.
Condition: In excellent overall condition. Signed on underside near proper right front leg.
