Lot 263, Auction 4/26/2024: Prehistoric Anasazi Woven Yucca Sandal Sole

$573.75

In stock

Native American, Southwestern United States, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 500 to 1300 CE. A rare and relatively well preserved single ancient sandal sole woven from yucca plant fronds! Yucca leaves were used either whole, split, or separated, and sometimes they were shredded and spun into cordage, which could then be woven into a whole shoe with straps. This is an unusual glimpse into ancient footwear since organic material, such as this, often disintegrates long before discovery! Size of shoe: 11″ L x 4″ W (27.9 cm x 10.2 cm); frame: 12.5″ L x 8.5″ W (31.8 cm x 21.6 cm)

Please note this item falls under the Safeguard Tribal Objects of Patrimony Act and is not eligible for international shipping. Native American, Alaska Native, & Native Hawaiian objects are only eligible to ship within the United States.

Condition: Wear and losses to fibers around the peripheries, but sole is tightly woven and holding to together. Missing most of straps, with a small section of one remaining. Displayed in modern wood case with a removable acrylic panel.

Provenance: private Clear Lake, Iowa, USA collection
