In stock

Native American, United States, Nez Perce & Navajo (Dine), ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. A collection of Native American beadwork, textile, and equestrian elements. The group features a beaded leather horse bridle with a fully beaded noseband and brass ornaments mounted along the cheekpieces. Also included is a miniature doll cradleboard composed of a wooden backboard covered in hide, with beaded hide panels and a cotton cloth lining. Completing the collection is a Navajo wool table runner woven in a red and black eye-dazzler pattern against a gray-beige ground. Size of textile: 34″ L x 14.5″ W (86.4 cm x 36.8 cm)

Condition: Fading and discoloration to Navajo textile, with a few small holes and losses to fibers, but otherwise stable. Leather bridle has stiffening to leather, with fraying and small losses to beadwork threads. Chips and abrasions to brass ornaments. Nice signs of age and use. Cradleboard is delicate, the beaded cloth is tearing and almost completely loose from the backboard. Discoloration and small tears to the hide on the wood backboard. Beadwork is intact and very good.

Provenance: private Manchester, Missouri, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
