$510.00

In stock

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ayutthaya period, ca. 15th century CE. A beautiful and serene example of a cast-bronze Buddha head. The face is wonderfully-expressive, with downcast eyes, a petite nose, and full lips. The drooping-lobed ears are highly detailed as well, as is the hair, which is stylized in a distinctive curled pattern, with a prominent flaming ushnisha rising from the top. The clear brow line and demarcated border around the hair are characteristics of typical Ayutthaya-period Buddha depictions. This sensitive illustration of the Buddha is enveloped in a verdant green patina with a few tiny remains of gilding that only adds to the overall beauty of this example. Size: 2.5″ W x 6.25″ H (6.4 cm x 15.9 cm); 8″ H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.

According to the consignor, this piece was previously owned by the Portland Art Museum in Oregon.

Condition: From a larger sculpture. Some chipping, flaking and abrasions to surface as shown, but otherwise nice presentation with liberal remaining gilding. Rich patina and earthen encrustations in areas. Old collection label and de-acquisition number purportedly from the Portland Museum of Art, Oregon on base.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
