Willem van Nieuwenhoven (Dutch, 1879-1973). “The Tinker” oil on unstretched canvas on cardstock, n.d. Signed in upper left. A delightful painting by Willem van Nieuwenhoven depicting a bearded coppersmith crafting a teapot in his workshop. Smoking a tobacco pipe, the older gentleman cheerfully tinkers with the shiny copper vessel, clearly taking pleasure in his work. Willem van Nieuwenhoven was a Dutch painter, graphic artist, book binding designer, draftsman, pen artist, etcher, lithographer, watercolorist, and miniature painter. Particularly fascinated by the life of the rural lower class, he moved to the picturesque town of Laren around 1908. There, he concentrated on portraits and craftsmen, depicting a shoemaker, a drinking man, a scholar, and a coppersmith, as seen in this piece. Size of painting: 11.75″ W x 14.75″ H (29.8 cm x 37.5 cm); of canvas: 13.7″ W x 17″ H (34.8 cm x 43.2 cm)

Condition: Signed in upper left. Unstretched canvas taped to cardstock; minor peeling to tape on verso. In excellent overall condition.

Provenance: private Graftan, Wisconsin, USA collection, acquired via William J. Jenack Auctioneers, Chester, New York, USA in June 2010
