Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran / Turkey, Luristan, late Bronze to early Iron Age, ca. 2000 to 600 BCE. A pair of ancient cast bronze and copper axe heads – one with a downward slanting and flared blade and the other with a secondary blade on the butt end. The Luristan bronze axe head has a tubular socketing shaft incised with stippled motifs, and the cutting edge is thick and blunt- indicating this was a votive or ceremonial piece. The exact origin of the copper double-bladed axe, initially attributed to Western Asia, remains uncertain. Size: 5.75″ L x 3.75″ W (14.6 cm x 9.5 cm)

Condition: Chips and nicks throughout, but otherwise intact. Heavy green and russet patina, and mineral encrustations on both.

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection acquired in 2021 from Art Mission, London, UK & Arte Antico New York, USA in 2018
