Lot 241, Auction 4/5/2024: Byzantine Limestone Relief Panel Botanical Design

Sold

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. A gorgeous limestone relief panel with openwork at its center and an ornate floral motif. The rectangular panel was likely made to be part of a tomb or architectural feature. It has a high relief ovoid at its center with spiral-shaped flowers extending from its corners. The ovoid forms a ring around the openwork, which is a repeated leaf carving. A large and beautifully preserved reminder of Byzantine stone work and artistry! Condition: Area of loss from lower undecorated back. The decorated surface is lightly abraded/weathered but overall in very nice condition with all motifs clear and light deposits.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, prior to 2004
