North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A marvelous and massive meat serving platter of rectangular form with rounded shorter sides and a shallow bowl, intended for presenting fine meats on a table top to elites and monarchs. Carved from now-extinct Kou wood, the platter stands on a single ovoid foot that wraps around the underside and has a carved handle on each side wall. The smoothly carved surface boasts a lovely patina from years of use, showcasing a beautiful natural woodgrain with hues of chocolate brown, expresso, and caramel; each side has a carved handle. Hawaii is renowned for its finely carved vessels, many of which are made of native hardwoods. Size: 26″ L x 12.125″ W x 2.1″ H (66 cm x 30.8 cm x 5.3 cm)

Condition: Minor abrasions and nicks, otherwise intact and choice. Great patina and surface smoothness throughout. Previous inventory label beneath base.
