$637.50

In stock

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century CE. A lovely gilt and lacquered wood Shakyamuni Buddha in the Mandalay style seated in the full lotus position, with hands in the Bhumisparsa (or Bhumisparsha) mudra. Age and exposure to the elements have added a nice aged and weathered energy to the tranquil Buddha but the majority of the high-quality gilt is intact, the gold tests to 61.5% to 79.2% (equivalent to 14K+ to 19K)! On the front of the pedestal is a Burmese inscription in black ink, which may translate to a proper / respectful form of Buddha. The Calling Earth to Witness mudra, also known as Subduing Mara or Bhumisparsa representing the moment just prior to enlightenment, with the Buddha sitting in meditation, his left hand in his lap with palm upright, and his right-hand palm downward touching the earth. Size: 6.3″ L x 4″ W x 12.75″ H (16 cm x 10.2 cm x 32.4 cm); gold quality: 61.5% to 79.2% (equivalent to 14K+ to 19K)

Condition: Chipping and losses to wood on the lower pedestal corner and verso. Buddha is intact. Some wear to the surface but gilt is largely intact and excellent.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Mr. and Mrs. Eric Sloan collection
