Western Europe, France, ca. 1826 CE. A well-proportioned flintlock pistol of classic French form, combining a smoothly contoured walnut stock with iron and brass-mounted fittings. The round iron barrel is secured by an iron nickel alloy barrel band at the fore, while the lockplate, trigger guard, and butt cap are executed in brass, now mellowed to a warm tone through age and handling. The flintlock mechanism remains clearly defined, with its cock, frizzen, and pan assembly intact, the frizzen positioned over the pan to shield priming powder, and the steel showing honest wear consistent with use. The barrel is marked with several stamps, including “26” struck at the breech near the grip, along with faint traces of a coat of arms adjacent to the frizzen, suggesting official or regional inspection. Additional markings include an “H” surmounted by a star on the barrel and a “B” stamped on the barrel band, likely denoting maker, inspector, or arsenal marks. The grip terminates in a rounded brass pommel cap, its form echoing the ergonomic curvature typical of French pistols of the period, designed for secure handling. Overall, the piece reflects the transitional craftsmanship of early 19th century French arms, where functional military design meets restrained decorative detail, offering both mechanical interest and historical presence.

Condition: Missing ramrod. Grip has been refinished. Minor abrasions to handle, barrel, and flintlock mechanism, and small chips to handle, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout. Trigger and matchlock mechanism still function, however pistol has not been test-fired. Hallmarks include “26,” “B,” and “H” with a star.
