Lot 234, Auction 3/19/2026: Mississippian Stone Celt Preform
$520.00
In stock
Native American, Southeastern United States, Mississippian culture, ca. 800 to 1600 CE. A finely shaped Mississippian stone celt or preform, carved from dense green-gray stone and ground to a smooth, even surface. The elongated body is gently tapered, with rounded edges and a subtly convex cutting end, while the opposite end remains slightly thicker and less refined, suggesting it may represent an unfinished stage prior to final sharpening and hafting. The surface shows careful abrasion and polishing, with minor scratches and small nicks consistent with handling and age. Its balanced proportions and streamlined form reflect the skilled lapidary traditions of Mississippian artisans, who produced celts for woodworking, land clearing, and possibly ceremonial exchange. Size: 8.8″ L x 0.8″ W x 1.5″ H (22.4 cm x 2 cm x 3.8 cm)
Stone celts were essential tools within Mississippian society and, in some contexts, functioned as symbols of authority or wealth. Whether a completed implement or a preform awaiting final finishing, this example demonstrates the technical control and aesthetic restraint characteristic of Mississippian ground stone technology.
Condition: Some small nicks and abrasions, but, otherwise, intact and excellent with smooth surfaces. Old inventory number inscribed on edge.
Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection; ex-Daniel Wolf, New York, USA collection, acquired February 2017; ex-MB Abram Galleries, Los Angeles, California, USA
