Native American, Southeastern United States, Mississippian culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE; Woodland to Mississippian periods, ca. 1000 BCE to 1500 CE; Pre-Columbian Mexico, various cultures. A group of sixty-eight artifacts including one Mississippian stone discodial reportedly from a mound in Chattanooga, Tennessee, accompanied by sixty-seven stone, shell, and coral beads. The beads vary widely in size, material, and form and represent adornment traditions spanning the Woodland and Mississippian periods of the Eastern Woodlands as well as Pre-Columbian cultures of Mexico. Discodials of this type are closely associated with the ceremonial game chunkey, while the diverse beads reflect the long-standing importance of personal ornament and trade across ancient American cultures. Size of largest: 1.3″ Diameter x 0.8″ W (3.3 cm x 2 cm)

Condition: Chips and losses to some beads, as well as a few nicks and surface wear throughout. Majority of beads are wearable. Discodial is inscribed with find site on side.
