$455.00

In stock

United States / Western Europe, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A pair of wooden costrels or canteens formed as compact, barrel-shaped vessels constructed from fitted wood staves secured by bent wooden bands encircling the circumference. Each features a round drinking aperture bored through the side, a practical design that allowed for convenient use while traveling or working. The darker example retains leather suspension straps and a removable wooden stopper. Both show expected age-related expansion and shrinkage to the wood, yet remain structurally sound and well preserved overall. Size: 7.25″ Diameter x 3″ W (18.4 cm x 7.6 cm)

Condition: The darker vessel has loosening to the staves, but they are still attached. Good condition with patina and luster from use. One retains leather straps and stopper.

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
