Lot 223, Auction 4/12/2024: Amazonian Shipibo Baby Sling w/ Bone Fringe

South America, Peru / Brazil, Amazon basin, Ashaninka or Shipibo-Conibo culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A woven cotton sling with an incised bone fringe that was used for carrying babies. The cloth is sewn with a vertical seam and the bones are attached with a cord along half of the cloth edge. Cotton is spun and woven by women, and often decorated with bones, beads, or feathers. Traditionally the bones may have been from hunted animals such as tapirs or monkeys, and later perhaps from domesticated animals such as cattle. Size of textile: 22.5″ L x 6.25″ W (57.2 cm x 15.9 cm); bone panels: 2.2″ L x 0.5″ W (5.6 cm x 1.3 cm)

Condition: Weaving is intact and excellent with some small stains and discoloration. Bones have dark patina. Overall excellent.

Provenance: private British Columbia, Canada collection, gifted from aunt in Tucson, Arizona, USA, acquired prior to 1994
