Lot 220a, Auction 4/3/2026: WWII Trench Art Artillery Shell Table Lamp
$390.00
In stock
Europe or United States, World War II, ca. 1939 to 1945 CE. A formidable relic of wartime industry transformed into functional design, this World War II artillery shell has been ingeniously converted into a table lamp. Rising with the tapered authority of a shell casing, the form retains its unmistakable martial silhouette while assuming a new domestic role. The body is composed of a polished brass shell casing, its cylindrical shaft widening slightly at the base before meeting a geometric metal plinth. The surface bears age-appropriate patina and subtle wear, preserving the character of the original military object. Above the casing, a painted red and green section – likely part of the original projectile or later decorative addition – introduces a vivid contrast to the warm brass tones. The top has been fitted with a standard electrical socket, rewired for modern use. Size: 6″ L x 6″ W x 20.5″ H (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm x 52.1 cm)
Objects such as this are often described as trench art, a term applied to utilitarian or decorative works fashioned from military materials during or after periods of conflict. While many trench art pieces were created by soldiers, others were produced on the home front as commemorative objects. In either case, the transformation of weaponry into household furnishings reflects a striking shift in purpose – from instrument of destruction to source of light. Both sculptural and historical, this WWII artillery shell lamp stands as a compelling example of adaptive reuse, embodying the material culture of the Second World War while offering a bold industrial accent for modern interiors.
Condition: Still functions as a lamps, but strongly recommended to rewire before use due to safety. Lamp is slightly loose on stand and bulb fittings are also loose. Expected surface wear with nicks and abrasions in areas.
Provenance: ex-private collection, Fairhaven, Massachusetts, USA, collected from 2010 to 2015
