Native American, Southwestern and Northwestern United States, Akimel O’odham (Pima) or Tohono O’odham (Papago), ca. early 20th century CE. A large hand-woven basketry jar with a matching lid, the cylindrical shape made using a coiled foundation method. The base coils formed from bundles of leaves or grass and then stitched with splints made from other natural plants such as willow, yucca, and/or devil’s claw. This was made as an artistic and decorative sale item and contains pictorial elements of figures, horses, and some other type of zoomorph – likely lizards. Size w/ lid: 9.5″ Diameter x 10.5″ H (24.1 cm x 26.7 cm)
