In stock

Latin America, Mexico, ca. after 1979 CE. An ebony wood handled letter opener with sterling silver blade, produced under the auspices of Sucesores de William Spratling. The carved wooden handle takes the form of an abstract parrot-like bird, with silver studs as the eyes, and a polished spherical silver finial caps the tail. The blade extends in a gentle, wavy profile, tapering to a rounded point and creating a fluid contrast to the dark wood. The underside of the handle is inset with a silver roundel bearing the William Spratling script square hallmark along with “TS-24,” indicating post-1979 production by Sucesores de William Spratling. Size: 7.75″ L x 1.25″ W (19.7 cm x 3.2 cm); silver quality: 92%; weight: 39.2 grams

Condition: Fissure along the notched edge of ebony wood, and the silver blade is loose and comes free from the hafting slot. Minor scratches to silver, and rubbing to inlaid maker mark.

Provenance: ex-private Moore collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired prior to 1990
