Western Europe, Italy, ca. mid-20th century CE. A stunning agate cameo featuring the head of a youthful beauty, likely intended as a classical goddess, in profile set in an 18-karat gold brooch with a suspension loop for additional wear as a pendant. Gazing downward to her left, her sweet visage is crowned by a tiara as her luscious locks pile elegantly atop her head with a few sinuous coils meandering down the nape of her neck. The cameo is fit in a raised bezel with a slender twisted band around the border and a post-1930 safety catch on the verso. Size of cameo: 0.8″ W x 1″ H (2 cm x 2.5 cm); of gold setting: 1″ W x 1.2″ H (2.5 cm x 3 cm); with suspension loop: 1″ W x 1.4″ H (2.5 cm x 3.6 cm); gold quality: 75% (equivalent to 18 karats); weight: 4 grams
Condition: Marked “750 AA228” on verso of gold setting. Intact and choice with nicely preserved detail. Pinning on verso for wear as a brooch and suspension loop on top of verso for wear as a pendant. Accompanied by petite cloth pouch for storage.
