Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer (Angkor), ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A red sandstone head from a temple sculpture depicting Shiva, shown with elongated earlobes that convey divine and royal status in Khmer courtly imagery. He wears a tall cylindrical mukuta crown with a broad, patterned diadem band, while the neck is broken below the jaw where the head once joined the full figure. The third eye centered on the brow and a crescent moon on the crown identify the deity as Shiva. Size: 4″ W x 5″ H (10.2 cm x 12.7 cm); 8″ H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Condition: Fragment from a larger statue as shown, with loss to the neck, and abrasions and chips to mouth and nose.
