South Asia, India, Jain culture, ca. 16th century CE. A hand-carved stone idol of Ambika (or Ambika Devi), the mother-goddess and protector of the 22nd Tirthankara. The poignant goddess presents with 4 arms, each holding a religious implement or weapon, and bearing remains of red and black pigment across her arms, body, and face; ample pigment is visible along the verso and illustrates how her clothing appeared at one time. At her feet is a pair of zoomorphic creatures, perhaps dogs. Size: 2.25″ L x 8.5″ W x 17″ H (5.7 cm x 21.6 cm x 43.2 cm)

Condition: Fading to pigment, with softening to finer details, and minor nicks and abrasions, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to figural form. Previous inventory label on verso, and older inventory labels and handwritten number on verso as well.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
