Native American, Southwestern United States, Mimbres & Hohokam culture, ca. 1000 to 1450 CE. Two palette tools hand-carved from a flattened piece of gray slate, with a slightly raised border and incised line around the shallow pan area. The true use of these palettes remains unclear, perhaps used for preparing pigments and some researchers have even suggested that the slabs were used for the preparation of hallucinogenic plants. Size of larger: 7.25″ L x 4.25″ W (18.4 cm x 10.8 cm)

Condition: Larger palette is repaired as shown, with break line across the center and adhesive residue is visible. Chips and losses to surface layers. The smaller palette has old chips and abrasions to edges, but otherwise intact.

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
