Native American, Southwest United States, Anasazi, Greater Salado, Upper Gila, Roosevelt Red (Salado Polychrome) ware, Gila Polychrome type, ca. 1300 to 1450 CE. An attractive example of Gila Polychrome type pottery – a bulbous ceramic jar with an attenuated neck and flared rim enveloped in black-on-white decoration save for its rounded base and deep interior that boast a bare, red-hued terracotta surface. A pair of zigzag bands wrap horizontally around the vessel’s wide hip, while a row of circular motifs embellishes the neck and slanted, parallel striations decorate the interior of the rim. The horizontal bands of directly beneath the rim are known as life lines. Gila Polychrome painted designs tend to be bold, large, and fairly simple. Motifs appear to have been expediently executed with relatively few brush strokes. Painted decorations cover much of the surface, and often result in the creation of negative designs in empty space, as seen in this example. Size: 5.7″ Diameter x 4.3″ H (14.5 cm x 10.9 cm)
Condition: Professionally repaired and restored with repainting in areas; all done very well and difficult to notice. Small stable pressure fissure to interior, and some light surface wear as commensurate with age. Otherwise, nice presentation with old collection labels on underside and interior.
