Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Anamese (sometimes Annamese), ca. 16th century CE. A delightful pair of stoneware lime-pots or binh voi, both displaying a globular body and a vine-form handle at the top, sitting upon a pedestal foot. The bodies of both are enveloped in a creamy white glaze, while their handles, which present high central ribs and undulating peripheries, are coated in hues of light green and deep purple. Lime-pots like these examples were used to keep powdered lime, which was combined with areca nut and betel leaf for chewing. A circular hole on the side of each vessel would allow one to access the powder with the help of a petite spoon or ladle. Size (both the same): 4.5″ L x 5″ W x 5.7″ H (11.4 cm x 12.7 cm x 14.5 cm)

Condition: Both professionally repaired from several pieces with restoration over break lines. Otherwise, both are excellent with lovely craquelure to glaze.
