East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 15th to 17th century CE. A finely carved stone sculpture of the bodhisattva Guanyin, the embodiment of compassion in East Asian Buddhism, seated in quiet meditation with hands gently gathered at the waist in an offering gesture. The serene figure is robed in long, cascading sleeves that emphasize her soft, symmetrical presence, while the face is modeled with downcast eyes and a tranquil smile that radiates benevolence. Guanyin is identified here by the small effigy of Amitabha Buddha set within her crown. In Mahayana belief, Amitabha is Guanyin’s spiritual progenitor, and his image in her diadem signifies her role as his chief attendant and universal savior. The Amitabha in her crown further underscores her position as an agent of salvation, guiding beings toward rebirth in Amitabha’s Western Paradise. The sculptor has captured both authority and compassion, balancing the formal dignity of her high headdress with the approachable softness of her features. Such sculptures were often placed in temples or devotional shrines, serving as focal points for worshippers seeking comfort, protection, and deliverance from suffering. This Ming Guanyin, still retaining its commanding presence, reflects the dynasty’s devotion to Guanyin as a merciful protector, whose popularity had by this period spread widely throughout China.

Condition: Loss to proper right side of crown and chipping throughout. Weathering with nicks and abrasions commensurate with age. Otherwise, nice remaining detail with encrustations in areas.
