$260.00
In stock
East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 13th to 16th century CE. This miniature pottery chair effigy is modeled with squared legs and gently curving armrests, covered in a sancai-style glaze with mottled green and amber tones over a pale earthenware body, the surface showing kiln pooling, glaze runs. The backrest is framed by raised edges, which echo full-scale wooden furniture of the period. Such chairs were produced as mingqi (tomb goods), intended to furnish the afterlife with symbolic representations of domestic and status objects. Placed within tombs, they served to provide comfort, authority, and continuity of earthly life for the deceased in the spiritual realm. Size: 3.5″ L x 2.5″ W x 6.5″ H (8.9 cm x 6.4 cm x 16.5 cm)
Condition: Left armrest is repaired and restored with new material. Nice craquelure and iridescence in the glaze.
Provenance: private Thousand Oaks, California, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 2000s
