Lot 177a, Auction 4/20/2026: Chinese Ming Gilt Pottery Buddha Relief
$650.00
In stock
East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A wonderful pottery relief of Buddha in meditation seated in double-lotus position atop a lotus throne. Thick robes drape his shoulders exposing a bare chest and a tied belt, while his round visage displays downcast eyes and full lips. His straight hair is pulled up in a top bun with long-lobed ears just below. Remains of lustrous gilding as well as red, black, and green pigments adorn the figure’s surface. Relief figures like this one likely adorned the walls of a temple. Size: 5.3″ W x 8.8″ H (13.5 cm x 22.4 cm); 11″ H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Condition: Head and top bun have been professionally reattached with break lines visible. Some nicks and abrasions to surface as shown, but otherwise, nice presentation with good detail and liberal remains of gilding and pigments. Light earthen deposits throughout.
Provenance: private Culver City, California, USA collection, by inheritance, collected 1970s to 1980s
