Lot 177, Auction 4/26/2024: Prehistoric Anasazi Puerco Black on White Ladle

Native American, Southwestern United States, found in eastern Arizona, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Puerco Black-on-White type, ca. 1150 to 1250 CE. A hand-built pottery ladle with a concave handle that flows seamless down to form the deep scoop. Black-painted triangles, spirals, and petite spots decorate the recessed surfaces of this utilitarian tool. Size: 6.25″ L x 2.625″ W x 1.8″ H (15.9 cm x 6.7 cm x 4.6 cm)

Condition: Professional repair and restoration to areas of handle, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and fading to pigment, with light pitting, otherwise in nice condition. Great motifs within recessed areas. Previous inventory label beneath base.

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
