Ancient Central Asia, southern Azerbaijan and northern Iran, Ardabil region, Meshkinshar, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 2000 BCE. A hand-built grayware pottery bowl of sizable form with a broad foot protruding beneath the tall, inward-sloping walls. Deep rings are impressed around the circumference of the foot, midsection, and shoulder to create an attractive and personalized presentation. A dish of such grand scale and skilled craftsmanship as this example would have been reserved for the elite of ancient society. Size: 11.875″ Diameter x 7.7″ H (30.2 cm x 19.6 cm)

Condition: Small areas of repair and restoration to rim, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions, pitting, and earthen deposits commensurate with age, otherwise in excellent condition. Great preservation to form and color. Previous information label beneath base.

Provenance: Private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s
