Lot 177a, Auction 5/3/2024: Early Indian Silver Sprinkler Vessel, Peacock Form

Sold

South Asia, India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful sterling silver peacock vessel resting upon an integral pedestal base. The flower in the bird’s beak has an opening which serves as the spout, and behind the tail fan is a threaded cap with a loop for filling the bird with scented water. In some regions of India, especially in Muslim societies, it was custom to sprinkle refreshing and perfumed water on guests in welcome and on worshipers during religious festivals. Pretty vessels such as this could be used for that purpose and as decorative display items. Size: 5″ L x 3.5″ W x 6.75″ H (12.7 cm x 8.9 cm x 17.1 cm); silver quality: 93% to 94%; weight: 379.4 grams

Condition: Minor indentation to base rim, and some surface scratches throughout but otherwise intact and great condition. Light areas of cleanable patina and dark toning. Sterling silver 925 mark on the base rim.

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired between 1964 to mid-1990s
