Ancient Indian Gangetic Copper Chisels + Flat Axe Head

Central Asia, India, Gangetic Basin, Copper Hoard Culture, ca. 1000 BCE. A set of 2 cast-copper chisels of lengthy form as well as a broad axe head of flat form. The chisels each exhibit a tapered end opposite the thicker end meant for striking with a hammer. The axe head features a slightly narrow neck in relation to the blade edge and was perhaps utilitarian in form. Each artifact is covered in naturally-occurring layers of patina in hues of green and brown. Size of largest (axe head): 7.2″ L x 6.6″ W (18.3 cm x 16.8 cm)

Condition: Axe head with stable fissure across body and tang; chisels are intact. Each piece with abrasions and nicks, light earthen deposits, and minor pitting in scattered areas, otherwise in great condition. Nice patina throughout.

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection, purchased February 24, 2018 from TimeLine Auctions, Essex, UK
