Ancient Near East, Sasanian (Sassanian / Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. A bronze bowl featuring a repousse motif of a long-legged stork at the center tondo, encircled by a dotted border. The bird is rendered in low relief with its wings outspread, an elegant emblem of fertility and renewal within Sasanian visual culture. The surface displays mottled green and brown patina from age and burial. Size: 6″ Diameter x 1.75″ H (15.2 cm x 4.4 cm)
Condition: Heavy mineral and earthen deposits, dark patina and green oxidation. Motif is soft and rubbed but discernable.
Provenance: ex-private M.M. collection, Hot Desert Springs, California, USA; ex-private Hollywood collection, Hollywood, California, USA, acquired 1970s
