Lot 159, Auction 4/20/2026: Medieval Jewish Ritual Stone Panel Double Menorahs
$5,200.00
In stock
Europe, Medieval Period, ca. 12th-15th Century CE. Rare Jewish Ritual Stone Panel with Double Menorah Motifs. Carved from a single block of coarse limestone, this exceptional architectural fragment features two deeply recessed menorahs presented in mirror-image arrangement, each rendered with stylized branching arms rising from a flared base. Between them appears a central rosette, a symbol frequently associated with divine light, Temple imagery, and renewal. The composition is enclosed within a raised, chisel-defined border, suggesting this panel once served as part of a larger liturgical or commemorative installation—possibly a synagogue frieze, tombstone element, or ritual building ornament. Size: 2.5″ L x 24.5″ W x 17.75″ H (6.4 cm x 62.2 cm x 45.1 cm)
The surface exhibits heavy weathering and granular texture consistent with long-term exposure, as well as tool marks indicating early hand-carving techniques. The stylization parallels Jewish stonework from regions of the Mediterranean Levant, Iberia, and Southern Europe during the medieval diaspora, where menorah imagery continued as a powerful emblem of cultural identity.
