$1,593.75

In stock

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A titanic example of a hand-built pottery jar of round-bottomed form with a carinated midsection, a tapered shoulder, and a flared rim. Across the midsection of the highly burnished, beige-hued exterior is a broad band of red and black linear motifs that create a stepped pattern within large rectangular spirals. Vessels of this size were perhaps used as storage containers for large quantities of grain or other foodstuffs. The most exceptional Casas Grandes vessels are of the Ramos Polychrome type which required great skill and aesthetic vision. Size: 15.7″ Diameter x 15.6″ H (39.9 cm x 39.6 cm)

Condition: Possible restoration to much of upper shoulder and rim, but repairs are nearly invisible if present at all. Minor abrasions and pitting, with light fading to pigment in scattered areas, and some areas of resurfacing, otherwise in excellent condition. Wonderful preservation to black and red band across midsection.

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000.
