Lot 155, Auction 4/26/2024: Huge Casas Grandes Ramos Polychrome Olla

Sold

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, Ramos Polychrome type, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery jar of sizable form with a round but stable base, a carinated midsection, a sloped shoulder, and a thick, flared rim. The beige-hued exterior is densely adorned with black and red linear motifs that include spirals, abstract zoomorphic heads, and geometrif forms. The most exceptional Casas Grandes vessels usually have Ramos-style designs, and examples such as this show how this style required great skill and aesthetic vision.
