Lot 152, Auction 4/12/2024: Ancient Iranian Amlash Grayware Vessel

Sold

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Amlash, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A hand-built grayware pottery jar of spherical form with thin walls, a squat neck, and a flared rim. Three circular nodules protrude from the side walls while a fourth nodule is centered beneath the base. Amlash vessels were buried in large megalithic tombs, built by part of the Marlik culture. Despite its proximity to the large Mesopotamian cultures, the geographical barrier of the high Zagros and Elburz Mountains kept it relatively isolated and a very unique ceramic tradition developed there. Size: 6.4″ Diameter x 6.6″ H (16.3 cm x 16.8 cm)

Condition: Small chip to rim, with light abrasions and nicks to body, and light fading to original surface color, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to overall form and exterior nodules. Previous information label beneath body.

Provenance: Private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s
