Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel in the form of a stylized avian creature. The conical head is adorned with a pair of raised eyes and a tapered beak while the rim bears 2 pairs of drilled holes, perhaps used for suspension or to attach a lid; the tail doubles as a petite bowl. Size: 8.75″ L x 6.2″ W x 4.875″ H (22.2 cm x 15.7 cm x 12.4 cm)
Condition: Professional repair and restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Minor abrasions, with areas of fire-darkening along verso, and softening to avian details, otherwise in nice condition. Good avian form. Previous inventory label beneath base.
Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
